Planned trip to Malawi and back: We will depart South Africa in early August 2009, following dirt roads along the coast of Mozambique until we reach Beira. From there we will head inland, passing through isolated rural villages, as we make our way up towards Tanzania. Just below the Tanzanian border we will catch the MV Ilala ferry across Lake Malawi landing on the shores of the beautiful lake at Chilumba near the top of Malawi. From here we will ride south down the length of the lake and back towards Mozambique. The return journey will take us through rural Mozambique and back into South Africa.
We will ride approximately 6000 km on small capacity trail motorbikes. It should take us about 6 weeks to complete, carrying our equipment and a donation of condoms. We plan to distribute these condoms to rural clinics along the way. We hope to improve the lives of women, as one of the main causes of death in very young women is complications in pregnancy and childbirth, not to mention the risk of HIV.
We have successfully completed this trip (and are now planning our next 'trip of a lifetime'). It was longer (close to 8000kms), better, more exciting and challenging than expected but we did complete it in the 6 weeks we had allocated. Read our blog for all the details!
